Helping animals live a pain-free, stress-free life

All animals deserve to live a life free from pain and anxiety, but injury, illness and the need to adapt to changes can make that difficult to achieve.

At Hoof and Paw Therapies, my aim is to help owners to help their animals live the best life they can, using a combination of Bowen therapy to help to reduce the symptoms of physical issues and promote relaxation, and saddle pressure testing to help horse owners and riders understand how their saddle may be affecting their horse.

Owners request treatment for a wide variety of reasons including:

  • older animals who are struggling with mobility
  • rescue animals who need help settling into a new home
  • animals recovering from injury or illness
  • animals with long term health conditions or musculoskeletal issues

Most animals can benefit from treatment in some way, and though most of my treatments are on horses, I also treat dogs and other small animals.

About

Hoof and Paw Therapies came into being as a result of my first horse, Yoghurt, who I bought in 1999. To cut a very long story short, he was never quite right, and I spent many years and far too much money trying to get answers. On a good day he was just about rideable, but mostly wasn't, and I retired him (or gave up riding him at all) about 7 years later. He was put to sleep in 2009 and the following year I started training as a Bowen therapist.

In the years I was searching for solutions, I discovered everyone had an opinion. Those I asked for, and those I didn't! Sadly, few of them seemed to give Yoghurt the benefit of the doubt and I lost count of the times I was told he was naughty, he was testing me, he was weird (I paid for the physio appointment where that was the conclusion!) and that what he needed was a smack to sort him out. There was a definite theme and a lot of the professionals gave advice that dismissed any physical or mental cause for his behaviour. I was stubborn enough to ignore it, but it was an unpleasant experience and one that I don't want anyone else to go through.

I certainly can't say that what I do now has all the answers, or that it would have made any difference to Yoghurt if I'd been able to treat him, but I can say there is always a reason for an animal's behaviour and reducing physical and mental tension can be a big part of finding a resolution.
